What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when the eyes don’t stay properly lubricated, either because they don’t produce enough watery tears—often seen after menopause or in certain inflammatory conditions—or because the tears evaporate too quickly, commonly due to blocked oil glands along the eyelid margins.

How can dry eye be managed?

Dry eye can be managed with a mix of targeted treatments. These include lubricating drops like Meibo Tears, lid hygiene with Theratears Sterilid or TLC Lid Wipes, IPL therapy, and punctal plugs or cautery. Meibo Tears support both the watery and oily layers of the tear film to reduce evaporation.

Blocked oil glands are a major driver of symptoms. As the glands narrow and secretions thicken, they can become inflamed or infected, leading to blepharitis, styes, soreness, and sticky lids on waking. Consistent lid cleaning helps—Sterilid Gel (with tea tree extract) and gentle TLC Lid Wipes both assist in unblocking glands. Omega-3 supplements can also improve the tear film’s oily layer

Warmth, cooling, and environmental support boost results. A hot MeiboMask softens waxy blockages before cleaning, while the cold mask soothes afterward. Radiator humidifiers ease symptoms in dry indoor air. For persistent cases, punctal occlusion helps tears last longer, and IPL reduces inflammation and improves gland function.

Comprehensive Dry Eye Management

Dry eye is a common condition that occurs when the eyes don’t produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. It can cause irritation, fluctuating vision, and discomfort throughout the day. Management focuses on restoring a healthy tear film and supporting the eyelids and oil glands that protect the eye’s surface. This may involve lubricating eye drops, consistent eyelid hygiene, warm compresses to improve gland function, and lifestyle adjustments to reduce environmental dryness. For more persistent symptoms, in-clinic treatments such as light-based therapies, gland stimulation, or procedures that help tears stay on the eye longer can provide significant relief. With the right combination of care, most people can achieve long-term comfort and clearer, more stable vision.
