All about IPL

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light therapy, is a modern approach to managing dry eye caused by gland dysfunction. The treatment uses carefully controlled red light pulses to improve oil flow in the eyelids, helping tears stay on the eye longer and reducing dryness. Many patients experience less irritation, redness, and discomfort, making daily activities like reading or using screens more comfortable

At Eyecare Specialists, we now offer Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy as an advanced, non‑surgical option for patients suffering from chronic dry eye — particularly when the root cause is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and Ocular Rosacea.

IPL uses red light pulses to stimulate mitochondria function, improving quality and quantity of  secretions, helping clear  clogged glands, reduce inflammation, and target bacteria and mites, thereby  stabilising the tear film and encouraging a healthy ocular surface.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy for Dry Eye

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is a safe, non-surgical treatment that has become an effective option for individuals suffering from chronic dry eye, particularly when caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) and Rosacea. MGD occurs when the tiny oil-producing glands along the eyelid margin become blocked or produce poor-quality oil, leading to rapid tear evaporation, inflammation, and uncomfortable symptoms such as burning, redness, irritation, and fluctuating vision.

Eyecare Specialists are one a small group of Dry Eye centres that are able to offer this procedure, using the advanced Lumenis M22 device. This delivers scientifically controlled pulses of intense red and near infra-red light of only a few milliseconds duration which are applied to the eyelids and upper face. The M22 uses a band wavelength filter set at 590nm for Dry Eye treatment.

IPL targets the underlying causes of dry eye rather than just masking symptoms.

During the IPL procedure, controlled flashes of light are applied to the skin around the eyelids. The light is absorbed by the tissue and converted into gentle heat, which helps to liquefy and clear blocked oils. By attenuating the inflamed lid main vessels IPL reduces ocular surface inflammation, also targeting harmful bacteria and Demodex mites that can worsen dryness. This process improves the quality and stability of the tear film, helping eyes stay naturally lubricated for longer periods.

Most patients notice significant relief after just a few sessions, with reduced discomfort, improved visual clarity, and healthier eyelid function. Because IPL is non-invasive and convenient, it is an excellent option for those whose dry eye symptoms have not responded to traditional therapies such as artificial tears, warm compresses, or eyelid hygiene routines. Many patients with busy lives find that Intense Pulsed Light treatment frees them from the need for frequent eye drops and eye lid hygiene routines.

At our clinic, IPL is often combined with Meibomian Gland Expression (MGX) to maximize results, ensuring that the glands are fully cleared and functioning properly. The treatment is quick, well-tolerated, and tailored to each patient’s specific needs, making it a versatile solution in the management of chronic dry eye.
